The 2009 Manoa Project Teen Playwriting Competition and Ensemble Apprenticeship!

Thrills, spills, and circus skills! From commedia to Shakespeare, stilt walking to improvisation - join Albuquerque's most outrageous and highly trained high school acting ensemble and see what the world of theatre opens up for you this summer. If you are 14 to 18 years old and are an aspiring writer, actor, set designer, costume hound, performance artist, poet, painter, clown, stand-up comedian, or are just plain stage-hungry and theater-crazy.

Students and writers age 14-18 are invited to submit a one-act, 6-12 character, original script for consideration in the 7th annual Manoa Teen Playwriting Competition. Members of Tricklock Company and professional playwriting mentors will work with the student writers to further develop the winning script, with the process culminating in a fully staged production and local state tour in July 2009.

Within the Manoa Project summer ensemble apprenticeship training process (June 8-July 26, 2009), Tricklock Company will produce the winning play with Albuquerque-area teen actors, assistant directors and designers through an intensive seven-week process. In addition to the winning play, the Company will select one or two alternate scripts that will receive development time and conclude in staged readings for the public.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Competition judges will evaluate scripts based on the originality of concept, idea, and imaginative approach to storytelling, including:

• Potential of script development through collaboration with an ensemble, director, producer and designers toward a production and tour.
• Strong characters and relationships that involve high stakes.
• Interesting style choices with the capability for bold staging and physical characterizations.

Tricklock Company will review scripts and interview finalists before selecting the winning play and alternate participants.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS APRIL 3, 2009.
Formal announcements will be made on April 17, 2009.
We will only consider scripts that have not been previously produced.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Please mail 3 copies of your script and include:

• Cover letter with contact information and play title
• Page numbers
• Date of draft

For reviewing purposes, your name, school affiliation and contact info should only appear on the cover letter.
